Toddlers: Kitchen Scientist
Toddlers – Kitchen Scientist
A multi-week, play-based exploration unit that invites toddlers to experiment, observe, and create through hands-on kitchen and practical-life activities.
Exploring science through everyday kitchen experiences
This unit is intentionally designed as a longer, multi-week experience, giving toddlers time to revisit ideas, repeat experiments, and notice changes over time. Using the kitchen as a learning space, children explore cause and effect, materials, measurement, and daily routines through guided activities that feel purposeful and engaging.
What you’ll explore
- Sensory investigations: explore temperature, texture, smell, sound, and taste using safe kitchen materials
- Cause-and-effect experiments: pour, mix, transfer, dissolve, and observe changes during simple experiments
- Measuring and matching: practice volume, quantity, and comparison using cups, containers, and scoops
- Practical life skills: participate in food preparation, cleanup, and tool use as part of daily routines
- Environmental awareness: sort waste, explore recycling, and talk about materials and responsibility
- Movement and coordination: carry, pour, scoop, and transport materials during hands-on tasks
- Repeatable activities: revisit core activities with small variations to deepen understanding over time
